Ask Claudia: Butterfly Garden Wedding Ceremony

Katie, Medford

Q:  Hi Claudia, I’ve wrote you before, but since then I’ve changed my mind on what i wanted :) I am now looking for an area with a garden feel, i absolutely love Brooklyn botanical garden but that’s too far – I’m on the east end, and i love the simple feel of The John P. Humes Japanese stroll garden but I’m not sure if they allow weddings there.. I really wants a classy butterfly garden feel, at least for the ceremony, I’d like to have an cocktail style reception outside under a tent but i know that quickly adds up so i can deal with having just a butterfly garden ceremony and an indoor reception if i have to. My budget is around 10,000… Do you have any ideas??

A:  Katie, unfortunately, if you are set on a butterfly garden on Long Island there aren’t too many options.  But — have you contacted the aquarium in Riverhead?  They recently opened a butterfly exhibit area.   From their website:  “Opening in 2011 for a limited engagement only, Butterflies will be open daily and feature a lush, tropical garden filled with colorful plants, water features, bird aviary, and a multitude of live butterflies from all around the world, including Central and South America, East Africa, and Southeast Asia.”  It’s certainly worth calling them to find out if you can have your wedding ceremony there — and they do fabulous wedding receptions indoors.
