A custom gown, antique earrings and blue suede shoes—weddings are a thousand small decisions that add up to one extraordinary day. In this ongoing series, The Inside Source talks to brides who leaned heavily on eBay on their way to the alter. Our second installment features a magazine editor getting hitched to her cinematic counterpart in a casually elegant ceremony upstate.

Who: Lauren DeCarlo, senior editor at Manhattan Magazine, to Phil Aceto, a film editor

How They Met: Through friends, during a long night of karaoke.

The Proposal: “We were hiking through the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve in Sonoma. I stopped to tie my shoe on a park bench and when I turned back around, he had a ring. I think I blacked out for a second, because I didn’t even hear him ask me to marry him—he assures me he did—I just remember saying, of course.”

The Mood: “Sophisticated but humble—and most importantly relaxed.”

The Palette: “Since it’s happening in October, we’re thinking fall colors: greens, deep orange and dark yellows.”

The Location: “Alder Manor, a beautiful 72-room mansion that was built in 1912 by John Mervin Carrere and Thomas Hastings—who also built the Frick and the New York Public Library—for William Boyce Thompson, a copper magnate. When you walk inside, you can just imagine the lavish parties Thompson and his wife must have thrown.”

She’s Wearing: “A custom-made gown that isn’t too wedding-ish. Just a really beautiful, fancy dress.”

He’s Wearing: “It’s been wavering between a black or grey suit and a tux. I think he’s surprising me.”

The Flowers: “Wild and overgrown with lots of greenery. The place itself has so much personality we don’t need much.”

The Menu: “Italian with Argentinean influences—pork ragu, clams with bacon—served buffet-style.”

The Playlist: “Music is super-important to us. Phil is a musician and music was always on in my house growing up (still is!), so we’re taking our time pulling everything together. There will definitely be lots of music from the ’50s and ’60s—everyone likes to dance to oldies—but we’ll also mix in Bruce Springsteen, Talking Heads, etc.”

DeCarlo’s eBay finds for the big day:

1. Linen Fabric (buy it now price, $8.49 per yard) “White linens felt too formal for the reception. We’re thinking about bringing or making our own—this linen fabric would be perfect.”

2. Vintage Retro Unidyne Microphone (starting bid, $5.01) “Since we’re getting married outside, we’ll need a microphone. This one would look so cool.”

3. Footed Glass Cake Plate (buy it now price, $43.99) “We’re not having a wedding cake. Instead, we’re going to buy our favorite fall desserts: apple cider donuts and pies! These pie plates are perfect for serving both.”

4. Vintage Gold Overlay Cake Stand (buy it now price, $9.99)

5. Classic White Votives with Glass Cylinders (buy it now price, $84.99 for 144 sets) “Votive candles are essential—and shipping on these is included!”

6. Fuji Quicksnap Disposable Cameras (but it now price, $27 for 400) “Disposable cameras for our guests to use during the reception.”

7. Sixties Boxed LP Compilation Set (starting bid, $9.99) “We’re big record collectors, this is a good start for what we’ll have on hand: The Shirelles, The Chiffons and The Shangri-Las.”

8. Christian Louboutin Electric Blue Suede Shoes (buy it now price, $675) “My ‘something blue.’”
