Ask Claudia: Wedding Gowns for “Big Boned” Girls
Julia, Merrick
Q: What are flattering styles of wedding dresses for us “big boned” girls? I want to look beautiful and feel like a princess, but I don’t want to have to completely cover up or have everything all hanging out…help!
A: Julia, you will find the dress of your dreams — no matter whether you are petite or “big boned” or in between. The key is to make sure you are not rushing. By taking your time and trying on many different styles, you will find a gown that you will fall in love with and that looks fabulous. Having said that, begin your search by looking at fashion in bridal magazines. Also check out our runway fashion videos right here, by clicking on Fashion Front. These are a good starting point to determine your likes and dislikes. Don’t worry yet about fit. Once you’ve narrowed down the options, print out or tear out the images so you can bring them with you when you shop. In terms of the most flattering styles for “big boned” girls, do look for A-lined gowns, which are flattering because they can give you a nice, streamlined look. Other good choices are empire-line gowns, which should fall nicely from just underneath the bust line, for a slim appearance. Lastly, I would look for gowns that don’t have ruffles or too many layers or even too many embellishments — instead, go for simplicity and elegance. And do come back to let us know what you purchased!
