I was complaining about the prices I was getting from my local florists to my boss and she had gotten married a few years before me so she recommended buying flowers from online. I did a search and Bridesign was the first one that came up so I searched the site and found my perfect answer. They had exactly what I wanted and what I needed, less than half of any estimate I had been given — I did not have a huge wedding and since it was outdoors, I didn’t need elaborate decorations, so it was surprising when my local florists wanted so much money.

Julia, can you tell us how much roughly you saved on your wedding flowers then? I’m especially curious because roses on Valentine’s Day are always so much more! And I’m happy to hear about your success story with this company…

My wedding flower experience started out very stressful when I called every florist in town and they refused to do my wedding because it was Valentine’s Day. That’s when I began searching for alternative options online… I was so lucky to find Bridesign! I’ll have to admit, I was skeptical at first. I mean, how could the flowers really be what I was looking for if I hadn’t seen them? And how could they be so much cheaper than from a florist? I decided to take the risk and find out for myself.
The ordering process was simple, and one of the best parts was that I knew EXACTLY what I was getting. I had a personal customer service step that I was able to speak to on multiple occasions when I wanted to add some things or change some things. Many of my friends who used local florists have complained to me that the flowers they got on their wedding day were not at all what they expected. You don’t need any uncertainty on your wedding day, and with Bridesign, you definitely don’t have to worry about that. I was so happy with my light pink and dark pink roses. They were exactly what I wanted – beautiful flowers and no “fillers”! I used some to decorate my cake and the cake designer said she had never seen such fresh flowers before! I can’t thank Bridesign enough!

I used Bridesign.com for wedding flowers last summer. They were awesome. My cousin had used this service before, so I’d seen the quality already. And they were super helpful getting me exactly what I wanted. Plus I saved a lot of money. I’ll keep buying my vegetables from the local farmers market, but for something like this, I’ll take the savings.

Jeff, your point is well taken. However, the companies I mention are not run-of-the-mill and they offer excellent service. And while I am a proponent of local business, these days brides need to think creatively about ways to cut costs. So for a bride having a daytime affair that is fairly casual, or say a garden or backyard wedding, these are perfectly reasonable options.

A strong concern with this strategy, is one would be attempting to treat the purchase like a commodity. Flowers are flowers, right? Um, no, not exactly.

When you go to a local florist, you are not just buying the flowers. You are working with a specific human, who is accountable if things go wrong, offers knowledge, insight and guidance to make sure they go right, and likely has experience at the venue you are booking so he/she knows what works well there. A good florist can also help use your budget to the fullest, offering meaningful suggestions on skipping high cost flowers and substituting look alike lower cost ones where appropriate.

For the occasional birthday, or “Honey, I’m REALLY sorry I did that” bouquet…flowers may be a commodity, but on the one day where everything HAS to go right, a knowledgeable local florist is an investment that pays back far more than a few dollars in savings.

That phrase “pennywise, pound foolish”, I’m pretty sure a bride coined that on her wedding day.
