According to Newsday, Brookhaven Town Clerk Pamela Betheil  pleaded not guilty yesterday to felony charges — she is charged with defrauding over 100 couples out of thousands by overcharging them to officiate at their weddings.  She’s accused of charging $200 for conducting wedding ceremonies outside of Brookhaven Town Hall from January 2006 to April 30, 2009.

Brides, Beware:  New York State law says town-appointed marriage officers can’t charge more than $75.
