Casual is key in Barbados.

I recently visited Barbados as a potential honeymoon spot.  This 21-mile long coral island in the Caribbean is actually a great hot spot for newlyweds — romantic, warm and inviting, and it offers tons of activities such as golfing, windsurfing, cricket, diving and tennis.  But there are also interesting attractions there, such as historic plantations, including the Sunbury Plantation House, which was built around 1660 and St. Nicholas Abbey, built around 1650.   The nightlife is cool too, and Barbados is the first Caribbean island that has Zagat-rated restaurants.

Barbados has a nice mix of vacation properties, from middle-of-the-road to super luxurious.   I stayed at Treasure Beach on Paynes Bay, St. James.  This is a relaxing, private resort with only 35 suites, all of which have a small living area and balcony.  For a more pricey stay, though, check out The Crane Resort & Residences in St. Philip, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.  Two other things that make Barbados appealing:   English is the primary language and the rum.
