Today’s expert guest is Nicole D’Angio.  Based in Mount Sinai, she’s a  master hair designer working exclusively with brides for over a decade.

Q:  When should a bride start thinking about how she wants her hair for her wedding day?

A:  Most brides get a vision the moment they choose the gown.  From then on, the gown will set the precedent for how the hair should be dressed.

Q: Is this decision based on the type of headpiece she wants? In other words, what comes first, the desired hair style or the headpiece/veil?

A: When a bride decides how she wants her hair styled, it definitely shouldn’t be based on the type of headpiece she wants, and without a doubt the desired hairstyle is the first step. I always recommend that all my brides consult with me before they choose their headpiece, if any, so that I can work with her to choose the right look for her headpiece and veil based upon the hair design. Many times brides aren’t able to maximize their hair’s integrity because they choose a headpiece and a veil without being informed of all the possibilities.

Q:  In terms of hair care, what’s your best advice for someone getting married six months from now? A year from now?  Two years from now?

A:  Six months from now:  Consult your hair designer to discuss the haircut and color schedule for the next six months,  to make certain your hair is healthy and shiny and has gorgeous color for the wedding day.

One year from now:  The bride should start to grow out any trendy looks in order to open her hair up to more options.  However, it’s never smart to grow without getting trims. Longer hair offers more options, but it will look unkempt and unstylish if it’s not maintained well.

Two years from now:  Have fun and be daring, find out who you are and what shape looks best by trying new looks. You will have plenty of time to grow it out and if all else fails, there’s always extensions!

Q:  What’s hot now in wedding hair styles on Long Island?

A:  The trendy brides today are going for a more glamorous look. What’s hot –  finger waves!!!! Oh yes, they are … back.

Q: How far in advance should a bride contact you, and is that for an initial consultation?

A:  I am booking a year in advance, so contact me as soon as you know the date. I do not hold the date without deposits. Most consults are done when the wedding is more than six months away.  If timing allows, a bride should definitely start working with her hairstylist at least six months before the big day. This allows the stylist to prepare her hair for all of the exciting events leading up to her wedding day.

Q:  How many times do you see the bride after that?

A:  I will see the bride for our trial and then again if we are doing extensions or hair-cutting.

Q:  What is a typical cost for a professional hair style?

A:  $150-$250.00 and up.

Q:  Do you go to the bride on the wedding day, or does the bride come to you?

A:  I will travel to the location of her choice.

Thanks, Nicole!
